Short answer
A tote shorter than 24 inches, not one measuring 24 inches. A rack hanging 24 inches below the ceiling has to hold the tote measured over its seated lid, the platform's own thickness, and enough hand clearance to slide the box in and out without scraping the ceiling, so the usable tote height is the drop minus those two things rather than the drop itself. Measure the bins you actually own across the widest lid, hinge and handle, because retail size labels are not layout dimensions, then lay the deck out at full scale on the floor: tapered sides, lid overhang, posts and hooks all take usable area off a nominal 4 × 8 platform. If you would rather keep the deck clear entirely, Koova states that its ceiling bin rail (opens in a new tab) fits most black and yellow 27 gallon bins and holds up to 40 pounds per set.

A rack platform can fit the garage while the storage totes do not fit above it. Tote dimensions also determine how much of a nominal 4 × 8 platform is actually usable.
Measure the exact bins you own or plan to standardize on. Retail size labels are not reliable layout dimensions.
Measure the outside, including the lid
- Overall length at the widest lid, hinge, or handle
- Overall width at the widest rim or latch
- Overall height with the lid fully seated
- Extra hand clearance needed to lift and slide the tote
- Actual loaded weight using a suitable scale
Add clearance above the tote
The platform drop must provide room for the tote itself, platform thickness, and enough hand clearance to place and remove it without scraping the ceiling. The fit checker assumes two inches for the platform, a figure we chose rather than one a manufacturer publishes, because none of them states a deck thickness. Your product manual and real tote geometry control the final decision.
If a tote only fits by tilting it through lights, brackets, or the garage door path, it does not fit reliably.
Lay out the platform at full scale
Mark a rectangle equal to the usable deck on the floor. Arrange empty totes inside it and note wasted space caused by tapered sides, lid overhang, platform dividers, vertical posts, and hooks.
Leave a deliberate retrieval path. The theoretical maximum number of totes is rarely the most comfortable or safest arrangement.
Decide whether platform or bin rails fit the habit
A platform accepts many shapes and lets you change tote brands later. A ceiling bin-rail product saves the deck, but depends on a compatible tote rim and per-bin limit.
Koova, for example, states that its rail set supports most black and yellow 27 gallon bins and holds up to 40 pounds per set. That specificity is helpful only if it matches the exact tote and storage weight you intend to use.
Store for retrieval, not maximum density
- Keep frequently used items on walls or reachable shelves.
- Group seasonal totes by the date they come down, not only by room.
- Use closed, intact lids and secure loose contents.
- Keep labels readable from the access position.
- Reweigh totes after reorganizing their contents.
